Tracing your ancestors

RCS England has a broad history as a professional body in overseeing the training of new surgeons and their assessment by examination. Its origins can be traced back to the Company of Barber-Surgeons, established in 1540, which was a trade guild and London Livery Company that apprenticed and examined prospective surgeons within the City of London.

RCS England’s Archives holds unique records on surgeons within the UK and Ireland from the mid-18th century to the mid-20th century. They are invaluable resources for those researching and tracing your surgical ancestors. RCS England’s Library holds a wide range of published resources that are beneficial for researching your surgical ancestors. These resources are particularly strong when tracing an ancestor between the 19th and early 21st centuries.
