Family History

RCS England’s Library holds a great number of published resources which are useful for tracing your surgical ancestors. The collections are strong in covering the 19th to early 21st centuries.

RCS England’s Library holds published volumes of the College’s Council Minutes from 1880 to 2014. They document information, which includes but is not limited to, College prize winners, names of examiners, names of appointed Fellows (FRCS), names of appointed dental surgeons and names of surgeons who received postgraduate diplomas in various surgical specialities.

There is an index in the front and/or back of each volume to help you trace your ancestor(s). The volumes are kept in the Members’ Library at RCS England.

The published volumes record the full names of Members (MRCS), their places of residence and the year they gained membership of the College for each year between 1800 and 1867. From 1843, they also record the names of Members who became Fellows (FRCS), either by examination or appointment, their places of residence, and the full date of their qualification as Members and Fellows.

These volumes are kept in the Members’ Library at RCS England.

Published annually between 1801 and 1965, these include lists of Members (MRCS) and registers of Fellows (FRCS) (from 1843), in alphabetical order with their addresses, and dates they became a Member and Fellow of the College. There are also sections on different diplomas and prizes awarded. This includes names and year of diploma/prize awarded. The names of each diploma and prize can be found at the back of the volumes.

These volumes are kept in the Members’ Library at RCS England.

UK Medical Registers

RCS England’s Library keeps published volumes of UK Medical Registers dated between 1868 and 2004. These list the names of doctors, their dates of registration, places of residence, and qualifications received. You can access the registers dated between 1859 and 1959 on Ancestry via a free trial or a local library.

The published volumes are kept in the Erasmus Wilson Room (EWR) of the Lumley Library at RCS England.

UK & Ireland Medical Directories

The Library also keep published volumes of the UK & Ireland Medical Directories dated from 1879 to 2002. These list the names of doctors, posts held, places of residence, qualifications received, and any key publications. You can also access the directories dated between 1842 and 1942 on Ancestry via a free trial or a local library.

The published volumes are kept in the Erasmus Wilson Room (EWR) of the Lumley Library at RCS England.

Plarr’s Lives of the Fellows is a collection of biographies of deceased RCS England Fellows (FRCS) from 1843 to present day, and Dental Fellows (FDS) from 1947 to present. This collection is available online, where you can undertake a name or keyword search.
